Benjamin Nigro, 88, of Metuchen, peacefully passed away on June 29, 2025.
Ben was born on April 29, 1937 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up in an Italian-American neighborhood, played baseball, went to an all boys school, ultimately completing his education at Pratt University. Ben was drafted into the military where he proudly served in the Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Ben started his work career at the American Foundation for the Blind based in Manhattan, then finally retiring from American Aluminum.
Ben married the love of his life Mary, to whom he was married for 58 years, until her passing. In 1973 they moved to the "sticks" as they would call Metuchen in those days and he learned to love the area as they raised their two daughters, Christine and Lucinda.
Ben was a talented drafting engineer by trade. His attention to detail showed in all the projects and hobbies he enjoyed. He was a model railroad enthusiast. His basement layout was of legend and had several articles published in magazines. He enjoyed a successful annual tomato garden, which he passed his secret techniques to his daughter Cindy. Ben was also an accomplished acoustical guitar musician and he shared his passion for the guitar and music with his family. He had many living room "tune" sessions with his father and sister Theresa, as well as serenading Mary while she did the nightly dishes. Ben was a proud veteran, every national holiday he would raise the flag and play Kate Smith's rendition of God Bless America for all the neighbors to hear.
Ben is predeceased by his wife Mary, his parents, Salvatore and Lucy, as well as his older sister Theresa. He is survived by his daughters Christine (Patrick) Doherty, and Lucinda Henchenski. He was a great-grandfather to Ryan, Jack, Alex, Mallory, Charlette and Benjamin. He will be sadly missed by the family he has left behind, particularly his five grandchildren Patrick (Amanda), Colleen (Ryan), Ti any, Raphael (Lexi) and Alexis. Our comfort will be knowing he is in good company with those who went before and hopefully Grandma has delt him the ultimate winning hand in pinochle. Go Yankees!!
A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025 from 2 to 3:30pm at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue Metuchen 08840 followed by a funeral service at 3:30pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, Please thank a veteran for their sacrifice and service.
