Benjamin Porter Ward, Jr., age 96, of Gulfport, Mississippi, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Benjamin lived a long and meaningful life filled with devotion to country, family, and the sea.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Laverne L. Ward; his father, Captain Benjamin Porter Ward, Sr.; his mother, Mary Ellen Estes Ward; and his sister, Nancy Jane Moore.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Hillary Lee Humberson and her husband, Bob of Castle Rock, Colorado; his stepson, Stephen Thomas Brooks and his wife, ZoeAnn of Bryan, Ohio; his grandchildren, Katie Samuels (Mason) of Parker, Colorado, and Andy Humberson (Amanda) also of Parker, Colorado; and his great-grandchildren, Tyla Bray, Macie Drey, Jada May, Tavie Shay (Samuels), Mabel James, and Maisie Sue (Humberson).

Benjamin lived a life deeply rooted in service. He attended the Naval Academy for two years before beginning his remarkable career with the United States Navy, serving honorably as a Quartermaster Chief Submarine Sailor and Escape Training Tank Diving Instructor. He later continued his life of service as a Government Employee for the USN as a Recreation Director. He was Navy through and through, proud, loyal, disciplined, and patriotic. His service wasn’t simply something he did; it was who he was. The Navy shaped his character, his friendships, and his worldview.

As a younger man, Benjamin found tremendous joy on the water. His 45’ Pearson sailboat was his escape, his peace, and his greatest hobby. He loved feeling the wind, watching the horizon, and simply being present in the rhythm of the waves. As he grew older, ship model building became his quiet passion, many of which were shared within the community rooms at the AFRC, leaving pieces of his legacy behind for others to enjoy.

Benjamin had a big smile, a contagious laugh, and unforgettable eyebrows that everyone remembered. He carried himself with strength and purpose yet had a gentle warmth that made others feel welcome, comfortable, and valued. He lived fully, loved deeply, and embraced every chapter of his life with gratitude.

Rest easy, sailor. We pray your shipmates who have gone before you were waiting, along with Mom, to welcome you home. We love you.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arden Hospice of Gulfport, Mississippi.
