Bennie Edward Bough, 96, passed away on June 10, 2025, in Springfield, Virginia, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease, surrounded by his wife and children. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and community leader, Bennie lived a life marked by service, compassion, faith, and unwavering dedication to his family.
Born on June 1, 1929, in Perks, Illinois, Bennie was the son of Lorenzo Bough Sr. and Katie Sowers Bough. Raised in a home where both parents were deaf, Bennie's first language was sign language, a foundation that shaped his lifelong commitment to communication and understanding.
Bennie's distinguished military career began when he enlisted in the United States Navy at 18. Rising to the rank of lieutenant commander, he served honorably during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Following his military retirement, he served twenty-two years as a civil servant for the Department of Defense.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bennie was known for his eloquence and leadership in public speaking. He served as International President of Toastmasters International from 1992 to 1993-a role that allowed him to inspire countless individuals around the world to find their voice and speak with confidence.
A dedicated Freemason since 1958, Bennie was deeply involved in Masonic life. He was also an active Shriner and served as the Potentate of Kena Shriners in 2012. His involvement in these organizations demonstrated his enduring commitment to fellowship and charitable service.
At the heart of Bennie's life was his beloved wife of 59 years, Kathryn. Their bond was one of deep companionship and warm affection-a partnership that stood as a testament to their faith and enduring love. Together, they raised two children: Kristopher Bough (Sarah Bough) and Sara Bough Lanz (Steven Lanz), who carried forward their father's legacy of integrity and kindness.
Bennie took immense pride and deep joy in his role as grandfather to Rebekah Polen, Emily Polen, Nicklas Bough, Keira Bough, Linda Lanz, and Karin Lanz. His gentle nature and faithful presence left an indelible mark on each of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Emma Dixon, and his brothers Charles, John, and Lorenzo Jr.
