Bernadette Lamae Boatwright, 56, of Ocala, Florida, formerly of St. Petersburg, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025. Born on September 20, 1969, in St. Petersburg, she was the beloved daughter of Rev. Judith Smith (Sherman) and Rev. Bernard Boatwright (Patricia).
A proud graduate of Lakewood High School's Class of 1987, Bernadette's life was one marked by dedication, strength, and compassion. Soon after graduation, she married and traveled to Japan before returning to the United States, where she made history as the first Black female driver for BFI Sanitation. Later, she earned her plumbing certificate from PTEC South and served the City of St. Petersburg in the Water Department.
A lifelong member of Christ Gospel Church, under the leadership of Bishop Preston D. H. Leonard, Bernadette served faithfully on the usher board and in the transportation ministry. She was known as a prayer warrior and a helping hand to many-always offering food, clothing, and shelter to those in need. Her greatest joys were drawing, completing word searches, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Bernadette is survived by her sons Darius and Darien Brown; her grandchildren Ivyana, Diaven, and Darien; her parents; siblings Christopher, Bernetta, Vonnetta (Johnnie), Sharonda, Joshua (Kenya), Aaron (Lana), Zachary (Marshall), Michael; and a host of aunties, uncles, cuzzins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Von Boatwright and Sherman Smith Jr.
