Bernadette "Bernie" Joan Overman, age 89, of Council Bluffs, Iowa passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Bernie was born August 1, 1935 in Marshalltown, Iowa to the late James and Helen (Musil) Bulanek. She graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1953 and on Sept 10, 1953 she married James "Frank" Overman. Together they owned and operated the Overman Standard Service until 1994.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Overman; daughter, Edith "Anne" Moore; son-in-law, Steve C. Jacobs and her 11 siblings. (She was 11 of 12).
Bernie will be greatly missed by her children; Rose Jacobs, Helen Meyers (John), Jim Overman (Sheila) and Janet Anderson (Kerry), 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends. Many will remember her as the neighborhood "Mom".
Bernie was not one to watch TV. She liked to read books and her newspapers (3 different papers were delivered to the house). You would find Bernie sitting in her chair with a stack of newspapers to her right and her scissors in her left hand. She would cut out articles that reminded her of a conversation she had with you, or if she just thought you would enjoy the story or cartoon. Then she would send it off to you in the mail. She also cut out cartoon from the paper to put out on the station counter for customers to read as they enjoyed a piece of free candy she had set out.
Bernie was also a letter writer and even finally took to emailing, but never stopped writing letters or mailing articles out.
When she wasn't reading you would find Bernie working crossword puzzles or busy cooking her family's favorite meals or making their favorite birthday desserts. Always thinking of other's.
Per Bernie's request, no services at this time.
