Bernie was a great scholar, teacher, and friend. He was very encouraging and kind to me when I was a graduate student. I will miss him and his sense of humor.

Prolific scholar, warm and funny, will be greatly missed. Always a human first; New Yorker at heart, proud to be the object of his jokes when we saw each other at conferences. I admired you Bernie and will miss you

Dear Debbie, Get-togethers with you and Bernie were always fun during our Minn years, and later with Bernie at the Medieval Academy. Sincere condolences and happy memories.

Bernie, although we are only a few years apart, I always thought of you as the older generation, representing much of what was best in it.
With thanks for your generous sharing of your vast store of wisdom,
Valerie Eads

I only knew him from academia and conferences. On the academic food chain, I'm "plankton" and know it, but one thing that says loads about Bernie's character (and for which I was grateful) was that he ALWAYS took the time to find SOME good question to ask junior presenters, especially when it was the sort of question they could chew on in order to help mature the quality of their work. While I can't claim any personal knowledge of the man, he was clearly a class-act and will be missed.
