Bernard E. Benjamin, 67, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2025, at Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford with his family by his side. Born on December 17, 1957, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Ben's life was a melody that resonated with love, dedication, and passion.
Ben's early life was rooted in the close-knit community of Blackstone, where he was raised by his late parents, Bernard and Doris (Carpentier) Benjamin. His journey in education began at Blackstone-Millville Regional High School and continued as he pursued higher learning at Westfield State College, later earning his master's degree from Fitchburg State College. His academic accomplishments were a testament to his belief in the power of education.
For more than a quarter of a century, Ben served as the beloved music director of The Charter School in Franklin. His commitment to his students went beyond the classroom, as he maintained lifelong connections with many, spreading his love for music across the globe. Through nominations from students and parents he was awarded the Who's Who Among America's Teachers twice and the Guiding Star Award for teacher excellence throughout his career. Ben often quoted, "Without music, life would be a mistake," a sentiment that truly encapsulated his essence. He urged others to "Remember all those times in between the beginning and the end, and don't focus on the end, please!" His life, indeed, was a symphony composed of varied tempos and dynamics, each phase as rich and meaningful as the last.
Ben's love story began in his youth when he met his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane (Desjardin) Benjamin. Their partnership blossomed into a beautiful marriage of 47 years, marked by mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they raised two sons, Christopher M. Benjamin and his wife Christine of Raynham, and Joshua E. Benjamin and his wife Jessica of Blackstone, who continued to bring joy and pride into Ben's life. Ben's legacy continued through his grandsons, Dylan Benjamin, Seth Cades, Cameron Cades, and Reid Benjamin, all of Blackstone, who will carry forward his teachings and zest for life.
Family was the cornerstone of Ben's world. He was a brother to Charlotte Guevremont of Cranston, RI, Gerard Benjamin and his wife Carol of Florida, and Louise Worrell and her husband Richard of Woonsocket, RI. His role as a loving uncle extended to several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A longtime resident of Blackstone, Ben was deeply involved in his community. He was a Cubmaster of Pack 3144 and Committee Chair of Troop 1 Blackstone. Also served on the District level as Health and Safety Coordinator. He was an active member of Divine Mercy Parish in Blackstone and the former St. Paul's Church. He was also a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society. His dedication to service was evident through his tenure on the Blackstone Fire Department, where he retired as Lt. of the rescue unit. Ben's interests were as diverse as his talents. He found solace in fishing, expressed his creativity through woodworking, laser engraving, and shared his competitive spirit by rooting for his beloved New England Patriots.
Ben's daily rituals included morning coffee and conversations with his wife, Mary Jane, which were the simple pleasures that he treasured. The warmth of campfires, fishing on a quiet lake, the adventures of camping, and the intricacies of tinkering with mini Legos filled his leisure time with joy and contentment.
Bernard E. Benjamin's life was a composition of love, service, and harmony. His melody will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him, and his influence will resonate for generations to come. Ben's memory will be cherished, his lessons will be honored, and his spirit will be celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his life's journey.
