Bernard Lee Cockrell, Sr., a native of Northumberland, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, at the age of 74. He was born on July 23, 1951, to the late Ophelia Mitchell and Charles Morris Cockrell.
Bernard was a devoted husband, father, and family man. He was married to his beloved wife, Clarine F. Cockrell, with whom he shared a life rooted in love, simplicity, and quiet joy, for over 38 years.
Bernard was a dedicated employee of Ferguson Enterprises for over 50 years. He found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid football fan, proudly cheering on the Washington Commanders and loved fishing, spending time near the water, riding his 10-speed bicycle, golfing, and playing basketball. He enjoyed keeping up with current events by reading The Washington Post and truly valued a quiet, uncomplicated life.
He is survived by his wife and son, Bernard Lee Cockrell, Jr. of
Springfield, Virginia; his stepson, Jerome Freeman (Latonya) of Rock Hill, South Carolina; his stepdaughter, Lisa Freeman of Fredericksburg, Virginia; his brother, Melvin Cockrell (Linda) of Abbeville, Louisiana; and his aunt, Neva Sanders of Silver Spring, Maryland. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish his memory.
Bernard was preceded in death by his brothers, Timothy S. Joseph and Maurice E. Cockrell.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road,
Fairfax, Virginia 22032, followed immediately by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. A reception for family and friends will be held following the service from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bernard will be remembered for his calm spirit, love for family, and appreciation for life's everyday moments. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
