Bernard T Covington

Bernard Thomas Covington passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025. He was 84. Born and raised in Williamsburg, he graduated from James Blair High School and continued his education in various areas at Thomas Nelson Community College. He retired from BASF after 33 years and continued working as he was not one to sit idle.

He was a lifetime member of James River Baptist Church and attended Walnut Hills Baptist Church for many years.

Bernard was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lewis Covington; his mother, Ruby Martin Covington; and a sister, Nancy Covington Ballou. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Glenda Mason Covington, son Michael Thomas Covington (Ann), daughter Melanie Covington Horner (Ashby), grandchildren Mason Covington (Erin), Matthew Covington (Alex), Mackenzie Covington (Anna), Britt Horner, Breen Horner, and Katie Horner, as well as five great grandchildren – Haylen, Harper, Oakleigh, Brantley, and Kennedy Covington; and a sister, Patricia Covington Newton (Bill), and many extended family members, friends and neighbors.

He was happiest when outdoors, especially when planning and planting their yearly vegetable garden with his son and any grand or great grand who was there to lend a hand. He loved little league baseball and women's softball and spent many evenings watching and tracking their scores. Additionally, Bernard was a bluebird enthusiast and a master at puzzles of any size or level of difficulty.

He built their home in Williamsburg as well as their summer house on Smith Mountain Lake, which the family has enjoyed for more than 50 years.

In remembrance of Bernard, we celebrate a life well lived full of kindness for those who knew him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of his friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held August 9, 2025, at 1:00pm at James River Baptist Church with visitation immediately following.
