Bernard Massie Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 15, 2025.
Bernard Evans Massie, Jr. of Berryville, VA, passed away on October 23rd, 2025 after a multi-year battle with lung disease. B.E. was the beloved husband of Jo A. Massie and the loving father of Selena Massie McAveney (John Paul), Joshua Massie (Abigail) and Shawna Massie. He was the devoted grandfather to Colm and Kian McAveney; and Fenix, Zelena, Rose, and Nayomi Massie. B.E. was the cherished brother to Linda Huffnagel (Marty), Barbara Eason (Tom) and Jeannie Massie. He was also treasured by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
B.E. was born in Washington, D.C., to Bernard Evans Massie, Sr. and Anna Lee Massie on September 3, 1952. He graduated from Broad Run High School in 1971. As a young man he sought employment as a heavy equipment operator. A few years later he met his life-long love, Jo, and they were married on August 7, 1976 at Pleasant Valley Methodist Church; they recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. B.E. started his own excavation business in the late 1970s. After this successful endeavor, he was employed as a mechanic and equipment operator for the National Parks Service at Wolf Trap Farm Park and later transferred to the Federal Emergency Management Agency located on Mount Weather. He retired in October, 2021.
He was supportive of his children in their 4-H and FFA activities and was an important presence handling livestock at the Clarke County Fair. In his spare time, B.E. found enjoyment in farming, gardening and raising livestock. He would consistently donate his overstock to local charities, including FISH in Clarke County. B.E enjoyed farm and estate auctions; he and Jo attended the annual Clarke County Steam Engine show and picked one antique item each year as an anniversary gift. His greatest joy, however, was in tending his own farm with his wife, children and grandchildren.
B.E. was a long-time member of Crums Church in Berryville, VA. During those years he was active with the clean-up road crew, adult Sunday School teaching and all-around helper for church activities. Throughout the years B.E. has always known Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, November 22nd at:
