Bernard Smertneck (BJ), 85, of Middletown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, in his hometown surrounded by family.
Born on January 14, 1940, in Middletown, Bernard spent his life deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. He was a proud United States Army veteran who was deployed to Berlin and served in the Vietnam War-experiences that remained a significant part of his identity and values throughout his life. He then became a conductor for the Norfolk Southern Railroad and after 33 years, he retired in 2010.
Bernard was a man of strong faith and worshipped in the Catholic tradition. His devotion to God, country, and family defined much of who he was. He took great pride in being a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Bonita Smertneck; his daughter Destinie Fox; grandchildren Cody Fox, Brady Fox, and Marly Fox; great-grandchild Alora Bryant; nephew Tommy Wilkerson; and niece Shannon Brown and numerous other nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Smertneck and Bernard Smertneck Sr.; his son Brandy Smertneck; brother Jim Smertneck; and sister Gail Motya.
Bernard had a passion for life's simple pleasures. He loved doing yard work and had a special talent for refurbishing old items-breathing new life into things others might have discarded. A loyal fan of local and regional sports teams, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Middletown Blue Raiders, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Penn State Nittany Lions. His enthusiasm for these teams was infectious and often brought together those around him.
One of Bernard's favorite places was the basement he transformed into his personal man cave-where he would unwind with smooth jazz playing in the background. It was there that he found peace and joy while reflecting on life's blessings. Above all else, Bernard cherished time spent with his family. Whether gathered for holidays or casual afternoons together, those moments were what he held most dear.
Bernard Smertneck will be remembered as a devoted family man, a faithful servant to his country and community, a proud blue raider, and man who just loved his red truck. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
In keeping with BJs' wishes, there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Gentiva Foundation in his honor.
