Bernard "Bernie" Smith, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on January 6, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on August 6, 1942, Bernie led a life characterized by a deep commitment to service, family, and friendship.

Bernie proudly served as a Sargent with the Indianapolis Police Department (IPD) for 20 years, where his charisma and sense of humor made him a well-respected member of the force. After his dedicated service in law enforcement, he transitioned to a fulfilling career with Citizen's Gas, continuing to share his remarkable work ethic for another decade.

Recognized for his robust personality, Bernie was a natural storyteller whose laughter and friendly demeanor could light up any room. His magic was in his ability to connect with everyone around him. He was known for never meeting a stranger and could fix almost anything he encountered, embodying an adventurous spirit that embraced challenges with enthusiasm.

In addition to his careers, Bernie found great joy in the company of his family. He cherished the opportunity to bond with his son, Joe Smith, through various activities, including running a baseball card shop together. Bernie played an integral role in coaching Joe's baseball team during his youth, fostering a love for the game that extended beyond the field. He often hosted parties for the young athletes, creating lasting memories and a sense of camaraderie among all involved.

Bernie's dedication to family extended further with the loving support of his wife, Cindy Smith, and his daughter-in-law, Nikki Smith. His proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly being a father to Joe, a role he embraced wholeheartedly and with immense pride.

His life journey also included a chapter of military service; drafted into the Marines at the age of 26, he prepared to serve his country until unforeseen medical issues led to an early discharge. The values instilled during this time influenced his approach to life and service.

Bernie will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but for the profound impact he made on those in his life. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; son, Joe; and daughter-in-law, Nikki. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Mary Smith, and four brothers and three sisters, who will surely greet him in eternal peace. As we remember Bernie, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to family and friends.
