Shirley Ann Downton, a beloved matriarch and devoted member of the Indianapolis community, passed away on January 10, 2026, at the age of 83. Born in Trafalgar, Indiana, on July 12, 1942, Shirley was known for her outgoing personality and determined spirit, qualities that endeared her to all who knew her.
A dedicated professional, Shirley spent 31 years at Herff Jones Jewelry before retiring. Her career was marked by both hard work and a commitment to excellence, reflecting the values she instilled in her family.
Shirley was not only a committed professional but also a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children, Sheryl Harris and Jack Johnson, who carry forward her legacy of love and strength. Her grandchildren, Heather (Joseph) Carrel, Anthony (Heather) Harris, Jack (Marisella) Johnson III, Rain Harris, Kami Harris, and Haley Mader, Trevor Harris cherish the vibrant memories they created with her. Additionally, Shirley leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, ensuring that her spirit will continue to inspire future generations.
In her personal life, Shirley had a diverse array of hobbies and interests. She found joy in fishing and camping, and her culinary skills made every family gathering a special occasion. Known for hosting delightful pool parties and entertaining family and friends, she created a warm and welcoming environment that drew loved ones together. Adventurous at heart, she enjoyed shooting pool and playing cards, activities that often served as a backdrop for cherished moments with family.
Shirley also shared close bonds with her siblings, including Barbara (Theodore "Woody") Wood, Peggy Hanshew, Marjorie Russell, Florence Keever, Rick (Darlene) Allgood, and Bobbi (Steve) Bennett, each of whom remembers her with love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Downton, and her parents, Paul and Helen Allgood, along with siblings Wanda Woods, Eugene Allgood, and Paul Allgood.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at Newcomer Funeral Home in Indianapolis on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring her remarkable life during the visitation that begins at 3:00 PM and concludes at 5:00 PM.
Shirley Ann Downton's legacy of love, determination, and joy will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a family that loves her dearly and countless memories that will endure in their hearts forever.
