Bernice Grace Monroe Flowers died peacefully, surrounded by the prayer of friends and family on
Wednesday, September 3, 2025 following a long battle with cancer. Bernice was born on April 24,
1936 in Havana, Florida George Washington and Mattie Lou (Bush) Monroe. Her family moved to
Jacksonville, FL where she graduated from Matthew Gilbert High School in 1954. She received her
bachelor's (1958) and master's degrees (1966) in elementary education from Florida Agricultural
and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, FL. She returned to Jacksonville after
graduation and subsequently pursued her life's passion as an elementary school teacher in the
Duval County School System for 38 years. It was not uncommon for her to be stopped in the
grocery store by a former student. To their surprise, she always remembered their name and the
grade she taught them.
She is survived by her daughter, Bernadette, sister Eula Belle Marshall (Marina, CA), niece
Cassandra Marshall (Brooklyn, NY), and lifelong friend-husband, Gerald Flowers, Thad Flowers
and Stephanie Reddick.
She will be missed by the many who affectionately knew her as Mama Bern.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of Christ
the King, 2699 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30305 with a reception to follow in Kenny Hall.
Her cremains will be interred at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Memory Garden immediately following
the reception.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home or the
Cathedral of Christ the King Cathedral Fund.
