Bernice Kaplon, 90, of
Youngstown, Ohio passed away on December 24, 2025, at Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley.
Bernice was born on April 16, 1935, in a small village in Poland, Europe. She was the daughter of Dominic and Elizabeth (Kopij) Barwinski. She immigrated to the United States in 1950 with her family and eventually settled in
Youngstown, Ohio.
Bernice married her handsome husband, Myron Kaplon, on August 30, 1952. They were married for 43 years before he passed away in 1995. They had three daughters: Krystina, Theresa, and Wanda Kaplon. They remained faithful and devoted to their family even through the loss of their youngest daughter Wanda in 1987.
Bernice was an expert seamstress who worked at Bride & Formal and Sherry's Dress Shop. She could sew anything she saw and was known for dressing her daughters and granddaughters in her custom designs. Stylish and beautiful, she loved to show off her fashionable side when she went dancing with her husband at Krakusky Hall and ldora Park.
Her Catholic faith was an important part of her life. She loved the Mother Mary, prayed the rosary every day, and enjoyed singing in the Resurrection Choir at St. Charles Church, where she was a member since 1962.
Bernice was an uplifting person who was incredibly kind to everyone she met. She was an. attentive listener, the type of person who would make you feel good about yourself. She always found the good in everything and made the best out of every situation.
Bernice will always be remembered by her children, Krystina (Joseph) Mortellaro and Theresa (John) Barvitski; her beloved grandchildren, Brian (Janine) Mortellaro, Jenna Barvitski, and Jesika (Dan) Barvitski Bloomberg; her great-granddaughters Emma, Abby, and Sarah Mortellaro; and many cherished nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family gives special thanks to Bernice's granddaughter Jenna who lovingly cared for her in her home for three years, bringing her company, joy, and music. They are also grateful for the staff at Masternick Memorial Skilled Nursing Home, where Bernice resided for the last year.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Kaplon; beloved daughter, Wanda Kaplon; brothers, Baltazy and John Barwinski; and sisters Agnes Kaminski, Helen Antolak, and Harriet Carey.
The family has entrusted Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St.,
Boardman, OH, with Bernice's arrangements, where they will receive friends from 11:00 AM to noon on Friday, January 2, 2026. A funeral service will be held at Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home at noon, with deacon Paul Lisko officiating.
