Bertha Mae Gary was born November 27, 1933, in Selma, Alabama to the union of the Late Reverend John and Albirdia Pettaway.
She was preceded in death by her parents Reverend John Pettaway and Albirdia Safford Pettaway; Grandmother Texanna Safford, beloved daughter Lucretia Gary Sykes; brothers Champion, and David; sister Candy Lyons
She confessed Christ at an early age and attended the New Home Baptist Church until her marriage to Leopold Gary, Sr. In that union, 5 children were born and joined the People's Baptist Church. She also attended the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church until joining the First Antioch Baptist Church of Christ.
Bertha attended Toledo Public Schools. She was a housewife and a Domestic worker. She worked in the church in many ways; Sunday School Teacher, loved to sing and was a member of the choir at New Home Baptist and People's Baptist and at First Antioch Baptist Church she joined the Mother's Board.
She was an excellent cook and loved doing puzzles, listening to music, going to the park with her grandchildren and son Thomas and just sitting outside in the sun. She played a huge part in all your grandchildren's lives. She also called her daughter and daughters in love "Girlie", and she became Girlie #1.
She leaves to cherish her memory sons Leopold, Jr (deceased Charlene), LeRoy (Angela), Leonard, and Thomas (Silvia) all of Toledo, OH. Sisters Carrie (Gilbert) Brown, Ann Lee Harris, and Sister in Love Grace (Richard Brown) all of Toledo, OH. Brother Isaac Pettaway, Toledo, Oh, and Freeman (Diane) Pettaway of Prattville, AL.; 6 Grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, many relatives, and friends.
