MRS. BERTHA JONES Obituary
"Queen" Berth V. Jones
December 13, 1932 – January 25, 2024
"Queen" Bertha V. Holliday Jones was born December 13, 1932 in Gadsden, Alabama to Willie Holliday and Lillie Mae Watson. Bertha and her mother later moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where her mother married Nesby L. Dale and gave birth two sons, Charles R. and Nickie L, and one daughter, Vickie L. Both brothers preceded Bertha in death.
Bertha was baptized at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She later joined Second Christian Church which was later called Light of the World Christian Church under the leadership of Dr. T. Garrott Benjamin, Jr. (presently Rev. R. Janae Pitts-Murdock). She was a member of the Usher Board, sang with the Golden Lights Choir and attended Monday Night Bible Class.
"Queen" Bertha grew up in the Indianapolis area and attended Indianapolis Public Schools, and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. She also attended Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School. She was a mentor to other beauticians and received the highest award of Master Cosmetologist from the Indiana State License Board. With that award you can own a salon and also teach. She owned her own salon (The Total Look) and taught many others how to run a business. She was loved by all who worked with her. She worked for over 60 years making women look beautiful, retiring in 2023.
"Queen" Bertha was a meticulous and stylish dresser, and was once voted among the "best dressed" in Indianapolis.
Bertha was married to Ted Jones and had three sons, Terry Jones, Michael Tanner and Rodney Holliday. All her sons preceded her in death.
"Queen" Bertha often said, "I have lived a good life and when the Lord is ready for Me, I'm ready. God has been so good to me."
"Queen" Bertha days departed this life on Thursday, January 25, 2024 at the age of ninety-one years, one month and twelve days. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Shawnda Tanner and grandson-in-law, Larry.
She leaves to cherish her memory sister, Vickie Mays Hood (Michael); stepdaughters, Barbara Y. Jones and Veronica C. Rice (Arthur); grandsons, Terry Jones (Brittany), Rodney Holliday II, Jarre'll Holliday (Jasmine), Montez Tanner, Kyle Tanner and Michael Tanner Jr.; granddaughters, Lisa Rowland (Aaron), Mikita Holliday-Love, India R. Tanner, Jasmin M. Tanner, and Brittany Tanner; daughter-in-law, Rita Holliday, brother-in-law, Donald Mays; devoted friends, Stella Brown and Rosemary Barringer; caretaker, Constance Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
