On Wednesday, January 4, 2023, Bertha Lucille Owen, loving mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away at the age of 96.
Bertha was born on February 20, 1926, in Lead Hill, Arkansas to Elmer and Flossie (Kelley) Rogers. She graduated second in her class from Lead Hill High School. Shortly after graduation, she moved to Oklahoma to be near her sister Nolene and even worked as an original Rosie the Riveter for a short time. On June 22, 1944, she married T.J. Owen at the Methodist Parsonage in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Homesick, Bertha and T.J. moved back to Arkansas where their first child Jerry Dale Owen was born on April 12, 1945. Seeking work, the family moved back to Oklahoma in 1953, and in 1956 Bertha gave birth to her daughter Pamela Gail.
Bertha loved reading and country music. She was never without a book and was known to break out in song whenever a favorite of hers came on the radio. Even more than her love of reading and music was her love for her family and friends. Far from resting in her retirement years, Bertha spent her time attending family dinners and sporting events or recitals with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She also loved shopping, dining, and going to movies with life-long friends. She also made it a point to stay in touch with long-distance family and friends over the phone.
Bertha was preceded in death by her father Elmer, and her mother Flossie. Also preceding her is husband T.J. Owen and her son Jerry Owen as well as six of her siblings, JD Rogers, Nolene (Rogers) Owen, Alta Fay (Rogers) Creach, Ruby (Rogers) Burleson, Brenda (Rogers) Lampe, and Nancy (Rogers) Lane. She is survived by her brother Kenneth and his wife, Susan Rogers and brother Howard and his wife Kay Rogers. Bertha is also survived by her daughter Pam (Owen) Stephenson and husband Larry and their children Jerred Stephenson and Kellie (Stephenson) Gilles. Likewise, she is survived by her granddaughters Kimberli Owen and Elizabeth (Owen) Smith as well as seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, January 9, 2023, at First Christian Church located at 11950 E. Reno in Midwest City.
