It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Bertha Ida Hoots Stepp, who departed this life on December 19, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on December 8, 1928, in
Hoopers Creek, North Carolina, Bertha lived a long and fulfilling life, touching the hearts of many with her warmth and kindness.
Bertha was a cherished member of the community in
Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she resided until her passing. A graduate of Fletcher High School, she dedicated her professional life to serving others as a Telephone Operator before joining Sears, where she worked diligently for many years.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Bertha taught Sunday School for over 50 years, nurturing the spiritual growth of countless young minds. Her passion for teaching and caring for children resonated well beyond the classroom.
Bertha had a zest for life and an unparalleled love for cooking and entertaining. She found joy in bringing people together, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for family and friends alike. Her legacy of love, laughter, and hospitality will continue to be felt by all who knew her.
Preceded in death by her beloved parents, William Hobart Hoots and Zelphia Lanning Hoots, her husband of 57 years, James Elton Stepp, their daughter Rhonda Stepp Jones, her son-in-law Tim Prestwood Jones, her brother Lawrence Hoots, and her sister Lorea Adkins,
Bertha is survived by her daughter, Kay Stepp Smith of Hendersonville, granddaughter Stephanie Hamilton and her husband Bryan. Her memory will also be cherished by her grandson, Isaac Prestwood Jones, and her great-grandchildren, Noah Hamilton and Ashley Hamilton.
A funeral service to honor Bertha's life will be held at two o'clock on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Family and friends are welcome to gather one hour prior to the service to pay their respects and share in the celebration of her life. Following the funeral, a graveside service will take place at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.
Bertha's profound impact on her family, friends, and community will be remembered and treasured forever. Her unwavering faith, generous spirit, and boundless love remain an inspiration to all.
