Bessie A. Bennett

Bessie Anna Bennett, 89, of rural McCune, Kanas, died at 4:03 p.m., Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at her daughter's residence in Daingerfield, Texas

Bessie was born April 2, 1936 at McCune, a daughter of Charles J. and Mabel Irene (Adams) Riggs. In her childhood, the family moved to several different towns with Manhattan, Kansas being one of her favorites. They eventually moved back to McCune where she attended and graduated from McCune High School.

Bessie married Marion Lester Bennett on June 6, 1954 in the United Chapel Church at rural McCune and Marion preceded her in death on February 5, 2014.

They made their home at rural McCune where she was a homemaker and farm wife. She later worked as a kitchen facilitator, setting up for meetings, and she did some lab work at the Education Service Center at Greenbush. She moved to Texas in 2021.

Bessie was a member of the Church of Christ and the former Extension Home Unit in the McCune area and she enjoyed her family, sewing, quilting, gardening, and assisting with farm chores.

Survivors include her son, Mark Ray Bennett, and his wife, Linda, of McCune; her daughters, Donna Jean Bennett Goedeke Mays, and her husband, Doug, of Daingerfield and Laura Jane Bennett Markle, and her husband, Larry, of Meeker, Oklahoma; 8 grandkids; 18 great grandkids, her sisters, Marilyn Daggett, and her husband, Larry, of Vicksburg, Mississippi and Helen Grove, and her husband, David, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews.

Bessie is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, Abel Enoch Markle; a son-in-law, Sheldon Goedeke; her brother, Calvin J. Riggs; a sister, Clarice Jones.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Minister Tim Gibbs and family members officiating. Burial will be in the McCune Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 a.m., until service time. Friends may call after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Daingerfield Church of Christ Youth and these may be left at the service or mailed to the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
