Bessie Simons Obituary

Bessie Simons, affectionately known to many as "Granny," passed away peacefully at her residence on October 8, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on May 30, 1938, in Wichita, Kansas, Bessie was a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, leaving behind a legacy that reflects her love for family, her strong patriotic spirit, and her remarkable ability to make those around her feel cherished.

Bessie dedicated many years of her life to the aircraft industry, working proudly for both Boeing and Lear Jet, where she eventually retired. Her commitment to her career exemplified her work ethic, yet her true passion lay in her family and home. She finished the eighth grade before entering the workforce to support her family. In 1987, alongside her brother Andrew, son Louis, and daughter Pam, she earned her GED, celebrating this achievement with a party that brought joy to her loved ones.

Known throughout her life for her striking red hair, Bessie was not only memorable for her appearance but also for her warm and welcoming personality. She was renowned for her culinary skills—her fried chicken, pumpkin rolls, and strawberry pie were particular favorites among family and friends. Bessie’s kitchen was often the heart of family gatherings, where she hosted big dinners that created cherished memories, including lively Christmas Eves filled with laughter and festive chaos.

Bessie Simons took great pride in her family, who were her greatest accomplishments. She is survived by her daughters, Dottie and Randy Baumgartner, Dorie and Rusty Woods, Sherry Simons and Alex Perez, and Pam Shannon; her brothers, Delbert and Shirley Gayer, Orval and Louise Gayer, and Lynn and Mary Gayer; and her sister, Tresa Meisenheimer. She was also a loving grandmother to Kristal and Cody, Kelsey, Joshua, Sarah, Brandi, Amy, Nick, Brett and Jennifer, Shane and Kara, Jimmy, and 20 great-grandchildren each of whom she adored deeply.

Bessie will be remembered not only for her delightful cooking and her passionate love for her country and her flag but also for her genuine care and dedication to her church family, where her smiles and warmth radiated. She had a special talent for making each person feel unique and loved, often wrapping them in her famous Granny hugs, which will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Simons; her parents, Louis F. and Wanona R. Gayer; her son, Louis E. Simons; and her brothers, Andrew, Larry, and Lonnie Gayer.

Visitation with family will be held on October 13, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Broadway Mortuary, located at 1147 S. Broadway, Wichita, KS. A funeral service celebrating Bessie’s life will take place on October 14, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Colonial Heights Church, located at 5200 S. Broadway, Wichita, KS.

As we remember Bessie Simons, we celebrate her legacy of love, kindness, and familial devotion that touched so many lives. Her spirit will remain alive within the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
