Obituary for
Betsy Webb (MacGregor)
Otis - Betsy MacGregor Webb, 61, died on November 24, 2022, in Bangor, Maine, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Betsy was born on April 29, 1961, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the eldest child to Donald (Bruce) and Christine MacGregor.
She graduated from Husson University in 1983 with a degree in Education. She continued her passion in education and pursued advanced degrees, first her Master's in Education from University of Southern Maine in 1988, her CAS from the University of Maine in 2000, and finally her Doctorate of Education in 2008 from the University of Maine. Dr. Webb was a passionate, committed educational leader who believes all students are capable of learning at high levels and the key to their success is acceleration. Dr. Webb began as a teacher in 1981 and held a variety of educational positions spanning all education levels. Dr. Webb most recently was the superintendent in Bangor, where her leadership resulted in increased academic achievement and development of a STEM Academy, a Visual and Performing Arts Academy, a Humanities Academy, Bridge Year, Early College Academy, and a Business Academy which gained state and national attention for student success while being dually enrolled in high school and college level courses. Dr. Webb was the 2013 Maine Superintendent of the Year and in 2012 was the Maine School Superintendents' Associations Outstanding Leader. She was extremely proud of the four National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence awarded to Bangor schools in her tenure. After retiring from the Bangor School Department in 2020, she continued her passion for education as a Libra Professor in Educational Leadership at the University of Maine to train and develop the next generation of educational leaders.
Though she excelled as a leader in education, she was most proud of her family. She married the love of her life and best friend Calvin (Chip) Webb in 1983 and raised two children together. She enjoyed spending time outdoors with her family at their house on Beech Hill Pond doing various activities like ice fishing, boating, hiking, gardening, hunting, and ATV rides. She especially loved to sit around a big fire surrounded by her loved ones sharing stories and laughs. Like many in the family, she was perhaps a bit too competitive and loved to win at family lawn games, card games, and was especially relentless in "spoons." She was an avid sports fan and followed her father's coaching career closely at Husson University. She especially loved watching her boys play on their various sports teams at Bangor High School and Bates College rarely missing a game. Continuing the theme of family and sports, she loved watching Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins surrounded by family and good food.
Betsy is survived by her husband, Calvin of Otis, ME; her son, Cameron Webb and his wife, Andrea, of Acton, MA; her son, Gordon Webb and his wife, Brooke, of Portland, ME; her grandchildren, Easton and Ruby Webb of Acton, MA, and Desmond Webb of Portland, ME; her parents, Donald Bruce and Christine MacGregor of Naples, FL; her brother, David MacGregor and his wife, Ethel, of Azusa, CA; her sister, Jill St. Peter and her husband, Jeff Buzzell, of Ellsworth, ME; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A service is scheduled for December 3rd, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Anah Shriner's, 1040 Broadway Bangor, ME, with Rex Garrett officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to Susan G Komen Foundation at komen.org to help continue the fight to eradicate breast cancer.
