Bette was born to Carroll Lee and Jessie (Martens) Hughes on November 22, 1958 in Sioux Falls, SD. She was united in marriage with John VanLaar on November 19, 2005. Bette worked a variety of jobs, most recently operating a cleaning business with her husband for many years until health issues forced her to give it up. If you knew Bette, you knew her love for the GB Packers, OK Sooners and animals; she always had cats and dogs in her home.
Bette is survived by her husband John, 3 sisters Carol (Mark) Rezac, Joyce Hughes, Julie Fitzpatrick and 1 brother Dave (Carole) Hughes all of Sioux Falls, 5 nephews Matthew Rezac, Joshua Hughes, Seth Hughes, Dylan and Logan Fitzpatrick and 4 nieces Jennifer Rezac, Abby Kocer, Kylie Hughes, and Rachel Hughes, 1 sister-in-law Colleen Hughes and several great nephews and nieces. And her precious puppy, Yarra.
Bette is preceded in death by her parents, Carroll and Jessie Hughes and her 2 brothers Donald Loell and Danny Lee.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be at Faith Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with food and fellowship to follow.
