Bettie Rae Mattern of Wintersville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025, at the Valley Hospice North Care Center. She was born on March 2, 1943, the eldest daughter of the late James Sr. and Agnes Cash.
A 1961 graduate of Hopedale High School, Bettie continued her education at business college in Columbus, Ohio. Working the farm fields alongside her father instilled in her a lifelong work ethic and determination. She was employed for many years at Standard Carbon of Ohio and her family's business, the Western Café.
After relocating to Texas to be near her sister, Bettie worked for Salesmakers Inc. and JC Penney before retiring and returning to Ohio to spend more time with her beloved grandchildren. She delighted in attending their school and sporting events, and she remained active in her community by preparing lunches for Kent City Schools and volunteering at the Stow VFW Post during bingo nights, 4th of July parades, fish fry dinners, and pancake breakfasts.
Bettie was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Unionport, now Toronto, Chapter, and proudly served as Worthy Matron in 1979. Throughout her life, she devoted countless hours to community service through organizations such as the Girl Scouts, Little League, Wintersville High School Boosters, and PTA.
She took great pride in her home and loved hosting family dinners and decorating for the holidays. Bettie passed down her favorite recipes to her granddaughters, teaching them the joy of cooking and baking. She also enjoyed watching wildlife-especially the deer, squirrels, and birds she lovingly fed. A loyal fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, The Ohio State Buckeyes, and NASCAR driver #48 Jimmie Johnson, Bettie could often be found cheering them on with her cherished cats, Socks and Patty, by her side.
Along with her parents, Bettie was preceded in death by her son, Tobby Mattern, and her sister, Bonita "Bonnie" Smith.
She is survived by her son, Jason Mattern; granddaughters, Jocelyn (Jacob) Arnold and Emily (Patrick Nguyen) Mattern; grandson, Patrick (Rebecca) Mattern; great-grandson, Weston Arnold; brother, James (Freda) Cash; brother-in-law, Dwight Smith; daughter-in-law, Elaine Mattern; and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, doctors, EMTs, and aides who cared for her with such compassion in her time of need.
In keeping with her wishes, Bettie will be cremated, and no service will be held. Arrangements are in the care of Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home, 215 Fernwood Road, Wintersville, Ohio. Please donate to your local food bank and support your local animal shelter in her honor.
