Betty Ayers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Boulding Mortuary, Inc. on Mar. 3, 2026.
Betty Crethea Ayers, affectionately known as "Big Betty," was born on March 7, 1947, in Bamberg County, South Carolina, to Annette Grant Ayers and John Ayers. As the youngest of nine siblings, she was raised in a home filled with strong family bonds, deep love, and vibrant personalities-roots that shaped the warmth, strength, and generosity she carried throughout her life.

To know Betty was to feel welcomed. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel at home-whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone she had just met. Her smile, her laughter, and her radiant spirit filled every room she entered.

Betty worked for many years at Graham Engineering before becoming a nanny, a role she embraced with devotion and joy. Caring for children came naturally to her; every child she watched became part of her extended family, and she poured love, patience, and guidance into each one.

A woman of style, creativity, and grace, Betty designed her own clothing and dressed with intention-always polished, always confident, always unmistakably herself. Her fashion was not just clothing; it was an expression of her spirit.

Music was one of the greatest loves of her life. Betty's gospel singing was powerful, soulful, and full of testimony. Her voice brought comfort, hope, and joy to all who heard it. She didn't just sing-she ministered.

Her home was a place of refuge, warmth, and good food. Betty cooked from scratch, fed anyone who walked through her door, and created a space where people felt safe, loved, and uplifted. She traveled often between the Deep South, Pennsylvania, and New York, building friendships and community everywhere she went.

Betty was preceded in death by her loving parents; five brothers-Wilbur Ayers, James (Cleveland) Ayers, Samuel Ayers, Henry Ayers, and Charles Ayers; and three sisters-Rosella Smart, Johnetta Ayers, and Elizabeth Brown. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy McMillan of New York.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sons: Rodney Ayers (Sharon) of Delaware, Steven Ayers of Kentucky, and Jonathan Ayers (Danika) of Florida. She also leaves three children of love: Linda Kinard of Pennsylvania, Roger Bowman of Maryland, and Janet Sweeney of Virginia; along with her adopted son, Edward Lathan of California. Betty leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, each carrying a piece of her love, her strength, and her legacy. Her life was a beautiful melody-full, rich, and unforgettable. "Her song may have ended, but her melody lives on in every heart she touched."

The family of Betty Crethea Ayers extends heartfelt gratitude for every prayer, call, message, visit, and expression of love shown during this time of loss. Your kindness has brought comfort and strength to our family, and we are deeply grateful. A special thank you to: Senior Life York, Rest Haven, DaVita Dialysis on Charles Way.
