Betty Jean Kirkman Burton, 92, passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Betty's life was a testament to faith, family, and the simple joys that brought her happiness.

A long-time member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church, Betty found purpose and fulfillment in teaching Sunday School and serving as the youth director. Her devotion to her church community was unwavering, reflecting her belief in nurturing the next generation with love and guidance. She cherished the relationships she formed there, contributing not just knowledge, but warmth and encouragement to all she encountered.

Betty had a passion for flowers, spending countless hours in her greenhouse where she crafted beautiful floral arrangements for friends and family. This creativity extended into her kitchen, where her love for cooking resulted in delicious chocolate pies that she eagerly shared with loved ones. A fiercely independent spirit, she relished in the simple pleasures of life, often finding joy in observing the birds that frequented her birdhouses.

Betty is survived by her sister, Doris Kirkman, and special family friends; Faye and Barry Matherly. Grandchildren; Hannah Long and her husband, Jonathan; Jason Matherly and his wife, Amanda; and Nathan Matherly, great-grandchildren; Aubree Long, Braleigh Long, Westlyn Long, Taelyn Long, Kinsley Matherly and Kayden Matherly as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Julian Caroll Burton, Sr., her son, Julian Caroll Burton, Jr., and her beloved siblings: sisters Lucille Whitaker, Wilma Kimbro, Peggy Whitaker, and Mary Brown; brothers James “Jay” Kirkman and Jesse Kirkman.

A funeral service will take place at Andrews Memorial Baptist Church in Graham, on January 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM, followed by a graveside service at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 1, 2025 at Lowe Funeral Home.
