Betty passed away on Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, at the age of 90 (almost 91). Betty was born in Smulton, PA. Her parents, Harry and Mini Shaffer, moved their family to Mifflinburg, where Betty spent her formative years. Betty graduated from Mifflinburg High School in 1953. It was in high school that Betty met and initiated a date with Gary Hackenberg. They married in 1953. They lived an adventurous life together, meeting and working with people from all over the world through Gary’s ministry as a U.C.C. pastor, and Betty was involved and by his side all the way. They were married for 67 years until Gary passed.
Betty was an avid reader, always eager to learn new things. She attended Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA, where she completed two years of her bachelor's degree, majoring in Psychology. Betty truly cared about people and was always willing to lend an ear and give a hug to anyone needing support and a friend.
Betty’s three surviving children, one spouse, and two grandchildren will never forget her for her love of her family, music, writing, and family dinners. She is dearly missed.
