Caroline F. Hackenberg, age 86, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026. Born on January 29, 1940, in
Martins Ferry, Ohio, Caroline was the daughter of the late Carl and Julia (Sanovich) Freund.
Throughout her career, Caroline diligently served as an administrative assistant, most recently contributing her talents to the banking industry. She was a devoted Catholic, drawing strength and guidance from her faith throughout her life.
Caroline enjoyed life's simple pleasures and cherished every moment spent with her beloved grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. In search of adventure, she often embarked on regional bus trips to the theater or other delightful excursions.
Caroline is preceded in death by her beloved husband, William E. Hackenberg; her sons, Thomas and Robert Hackenberg; her sisters, Virginia Hellrigel and Marie Zani; and her brothers, Joseph and William Freund.
She is survived by her loving sons, James Hackenberg of
Shinnston, WV, and David (Melissa) Hackenberg of
Pittsburgh, PA; her sister, Julie Froble; her adored grandchildren, Dominic, Amber, Robert, and Michael Hackenberg; her daughter-in-law, Tammy Hackenberg; as well as several nieces and nephews, including Donnie Hellrigel, with whom she shared a special bond.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 12 p.m. until the time of the Funeral Service at 3 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff St.,
Wheeling, WV. Caroline will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.
