Betty Lou McFarland Shilling Curfman, 88, passed away peacefully at home with family on July 4, 2025, in Winter Haven, Florida.
Born on July 19, 1936, in Wheeling, West Virginia, she lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and the simple joys that brought her happiness. She was an accomplished graduate of Triadelphia High School in Wheeling, Class of 1955. She worked at The Hub & Midland Finance in Wheeling, WV, was a Homemaker, Owner of Pleasants County Insurance in St. Mary's, WV & as a Certified Nurse in Winter Haven, FL, where her unending generosity was much appreciated by those in her care.
Betty carried the values of her parent's upbringing throughout her life. She was Methodist by faith & found great comfort and inspiration in her spiritual practices. She had many fond memories of the days at The McFarland Camp where all the relatives gathered, played music & created cherished family time together. She thoroughly enjoyed her reminiscing phone calls from her sister-in-law Nancy McFarland & often daily inspirations from her niece, Vicki McFarland & her dear and caring Florida friends and neighbors. Each Sunday held special meaning for her as she tuned into the Turning Point broadcast by Dr. David Jeremiah. She enjoyed music by Daniel O'Donnell as well as music lovingly performed & sent to her weekly by her dedicated great-nephew, Danny McFarland Jr.
Betty had a deep love for cooking and baking-especially during the holidays when she would prepare an astonishing 27 dozen cookies to share with her close friends. Her home was often filled with the aroma of fresh-baked treats and adorned with beautiful flowers from Bob that reflected her appreciation for nature's beauty.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Jo Shilling; Robert McKechnie; brothers, Leo & Terry McFarland; several nieces & nephews,as well as great-nieces & great-nephews, who will remember her warmth and generosity.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved son, Ronald W. Shilling; William S. Shilling; parents, Samuel McFarland & Martha Davis McFarland; brothers, Frank, Arthur and Arnold McFarland.
A bold woman of quiet strength, profound courage and enduring kindness, Betty supported causes close to her heart including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital & Dr. David Jeremiah's Turning Point for God. Her legacy lives on through those who knew her gentle spirit & unwavering faith.
Memorial contributions may be made to Turning Point for God or St Jude.org in honor of Betty's lifelong compassion.
May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Memorial Service and interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery Chapel, 1526 National Road, Wheeling, WV on August 30, 2025 at 11am.
