Betty L. Overton, 90, of rural Unionville, MO, passed away Friday, August 22, 2025, at The Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville, MO.

The only daughter of James R. “Jimmie” and Zelpha Ann (Williams) Thompson was born in the South Gifford Community on June 28, 1935. Betty got her middle name from her two older brothers, Warren and George, who gave her the middle name Louaine. Her big brothers were just that, 14 and 11 years older than her.

Betty attended grade school in the South Gifford school and went to LaPlata High School, graduating in May, 1953. When Betty was 12, she professed her faith in our Lord and was baptized in the First Christian Church of LaPlata with a group of her friends. Betty grew up in a large family where she had 36 first cousins.

On December 15, 1953, she was united in marriage to R. Edward Overton who preceded her in death on July 21, 1999.

As a youth Betty was very involved in the 4-H where she showed her Hereford heifer and also had many sewing projects. This love of 4-H continued into adulthood as she loved teaching 4-H foods, sewing, and canning. Betty’s legacy in 4-H was followed by her family, as there are know four generations of 4-Hers in the family. She loved the time she was able to spend with her husband Edward on the farm. Betty was a member of the Worthington Garden Club and enjoyed spending time with her friends’ discussing flowers. She loved a good garage sale, always on the hunt for a good bargain. Betty also loved taking care of her kittens out on the farm. Every election day you could find Betty volunteering at the polling place in Elm Township Polling Place in Martinstown. Betty also served on the board of the Pleasant Home Cemetery for many years.

She will be sadly missed and forever remembered by four children, Beverly Jane Edwards and husband Jim of Keytesville, MO, Connie Sue Overton of Centerville, IA, Lonnie Edward Overton of Milan, MO, and Orin Oliver Overton and wife Tammy of rural Unionville, MO; six grandchildren, Eric Alexander and wife Becky, Holly (Alexander) Peterson and husband Chad, Bram Clark and wife Natalie, Oliver Overton and wife Cassey, Kyle Overton and wife Amanda, and Tanner Overton and wife Karen; five great grandsons, Cole Alexander and fiancé Kenzie, Gage Alexander and fiancé Coylea, Kolton Foreman, Rylan Clark and McCoy Overton; eight great granddaughters, Alyssa Peterson, Oriahnna Overton, Abigail Overton, Tynley Overton, Susannah Overton, Macey Ocerton, Mechlin Overton and Fallon Clark.

Betty was preceded in death by parents; her husband; two brothers, Warren Thompson and Geroge Thompson; two nephews, Jerome Butler and John Thompson; one niece, Anna Mae (Thompson) Jones; two great nieces, Jill Butler and Shannon Thompson; three brothers-in-law, Ralph Butler, Wally Berry, and Junior Deierling; five sisters-in-law, Blanche Deierling, Fern Berry, May Vincent, Imogene Thompson, and Wynona Thompson.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Dooley Funeral Home in Queen City. Following the visitation a graveside service will be held in the Pleasant Home Cemetery in Worthington with Pastor Darl Davis officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Home Cemetery Fund.
