Betty Darline Sperl, known affectionately as Mom, Mom-mom, Great mom-mom, or Darline by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on September 28, 1942, she was raised by her parents, the late Betty and Joseph Messina, Darline grew up surrounded by the love and camaraderie of her siblings Butch (Cindy) Mabus, Diane Messina, Tim Messina, the late Joe Messina, and sister-in-law Judy, along with the late Pauline Mabus. Her life was a tapestry of warmth, dedication, and joy, which she shared generously with everyone she encountered.
In 1959, Darline married the love of her life, Walter Sperl Jr., and together they embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned over six decades. Their enduring partnership was blessed with four children: Yvonne (Richard) Conner, Buddy (Dawn) Sperl, Jeff (Carmen) Sperl, and Dana Sperl. Darline's role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, and her guidance and affection helped shape the lives of her children in countless ways.
The family tree continued to flourish under Darline's nurturing presence, as she became the proud grandmother to Kerri (Joey), Derek (Megan), Shayne, Brett (Hailey), Dillon, Amanda, Katelynn, Tristan, Ayden, Tanner, and Sydney. Her legacy further expanded with the arrival of nine great-grandchildren, each of whom brought additional joy and laughter to her life.
Darline's passions extended beyond her family. She was an active and devoted member of the Bel Air Corvette Club since 1997, where she shared her enthusiasm for classic cars with fellow aficionados. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her beautifully tended garden, a haven for the colorful flowers and the birds she adored watching. Birdwatching and immersing herself in nature were activities that brought Darline immense peace and contentment.
Those who knew Darline will remember her for her radiant smile, her unwavering kindness, and the gentle strength she exhibited throughout her life. She was a beacon of love and stability for her family, and her memory will continue to inspire and guide them.
As we bid farewell to Darline, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and cherish the countless memories she leaves behind. Her spirit, like the gardens she tended and the birds she marveled at, will continue to bloom and soar in the hearts of those who loved her. Darline's presence will be profoundly missed, but her legacy of love, family, and joy will endure forever.
Family will honor and celebrate Darline's life on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 3PM- 5PM + 7PM- 9PM at the family-owned Evans Life Celebration Home- 8800 Harford Rd.
