Betty Kay Thurman, of Lambertville, NJ, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, in Ewing, NJ, at the home of her daughter, Shelley, Carter. She was 82 years old.
Born in Trenton, Betty was a lifelong resident of Lambertville. She attended Lambertville Public School and Lambertville High School. Betty was the floor manager at Lipton Tea in Flemington for 12 years prior to retiring. Earlier she worked as a bus driver and nurse for Lambertville's Project Head Start. Betty was dedicated to her family and her community. She served for 10 years as president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Toscanni Post 120 of the Lambertville American Legion in Lambertville where she worked tirelessly for the success of the post. Other organizations Betty was active in included the Lambertville Elks Lodge 1070, the Flemington Post of the VFW and the Flemington Moose Lodge. As a young woman Betty drove her 65 Chevy Super Sport competitively at the Englishtown racetrack. Betty was a wonderful cook and generous hostess who always welcomed family and friends to her table.
Betty was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Crawley Pidgeon and the sister of the late John R. Pidgeon. She is survived by her husband Thomas M. Thurman; her daughters Shelley Carter of Ewing and Peggy Jones of Somerville; her son-in-law David Jones of Lambertville; her step-son and his wife Vincent and Nicole Thurman of Kitrell, NC; her grandchildren Jasmine Kay Carter, Shianne Nicole Howard, Latifah Aliyah Howard, Thomas Ryan Carter, Tineshia Mercedes Shephard and Tamara LaShauna Jones; her great-grandchildren William Boyce, Lilliana Boyce, Logan Boyce, Stephania Meza and Nathan Meza; her sisters Marion Johnson of Quakertown, PA and Shirley Lee of Flemington; her brother William Pidgeon and his wife Mary of Lambertville; her many nieces, nephews and friends whose lives she touched.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 11 am at the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
Rev. Dan Paek officiating. Interment will follow at Holcombe-Riverview Cemetery, Delaware Township, NJ.
American Legion services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning at 10:30 am.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 am until the start of services.
Donations in Betty's memory may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Toscanni Post 120, 322 N Union Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530; the Lambertville Elks (BPOE Post 1070), 66 Wilson Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530; or to the Lambertville-New Hope Rescue Squad, PO Box 237, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
