Beverly Shaffer (née Reilly), loving wife, mom, and grandma, of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025 after a brief time with Trinity Hospice at Lourdes Senior Community in Waterford. Bev was raised on the east side of Detroit, graduating from Servite High School and then working at Michigan Consolidated Gas Company until she became a mom. She and her husband Byron moved to Royal Oak in 1967, and the family became part of Shrine of the Little Flower parish and the kids attended Shrine Schools. Bev became entrenched in volunteer life at Shrine with various stints as tutor, cheerleader moderator, Mom's Club member, taking on special projects at Shrine Church (she and the two Mrs. Hauberts could be seen polishing the patio doors to a fine shine as well as making the pews at Shrine glow). She led tours of Shrine, conducted wedding rehearsals and was part of the group of volunteers who counted the weekend collections each Monday. She loved being part of the Shrine Community. Over the years, Bev recounted fondly many memories. These included family trips to see her parents, Tom and Eleanor Reilly, in St. Helen, Michigan. Weeks were spent with 2-3 extra families in a two-bedroom, one bathroom home, and Bev said it was always a good time to hop in the car to go look for deer. Later in life, Byron and Bev loved to golf and took a few trips with her cousins, Joyce and Gary Ford and brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sherry Reilly. Bev lived a wonderful life filled with adventures as well as some quiet times, but she much preferred the adventures! Bev will be remembered as the beloved wife of the late Byron, who passed in 2011. Loving mother of Beth (Michelle Hicks) Caverly, Jim (Susan) Shaffer, and the late Kristen (survived by Patrick) McHugh; and proud grandmother of her eight grandchildren. Dear sister of Pat (the late Gene) Chambers and sister-in-law of Sherry (the late Jim) Reilly. Bev also left behind her very dear childhood friend Dorothy Scully ("Scully"), her Shrine "Ladies who Lunch" crew who gathered regularly for over 45 years; and her neighbor and invaluable friend, Ralph Fader, who was of great support as he provided a watchful eye before she made the move to Lourdes Senior Community in Waterford. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 17, from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral service, 7:00 p.m., at William Sullivan and Son Funeral Directors, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd. (four blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. Please come to share your special memories. The family will cherish learning more about their mom/grandma/sister/sister-in-law. A private burial will take place the following day. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lourdes Senior Community or Trinity Hospice.
