Funeral services for Bill Bailey, of Starbuck, Minnesota, will be held Monday, July 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Starbuck Community Center in Starbuck, with Pastor Katrina Hoffman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, July 9, 2023, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck and for one hour prior to the service on Monday. A private family burial will be at Fron Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.
Billy Darrell Bailey, son of Howard and Marion (Smith) Bailey, was born July 19, 1939 in Burlington, Iowa, where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Burlington High School in 1957. Following graduation, Bill attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he played football. It was at Luther College, that Bill met Karen Hustad, and they were united in marriage on September 3, 1961 in Cresco, Iowa. To this union, two daughters: Malinda and Sheila were born. The family moved to Starbuck, Minnesota in 1970, where Bill began his teaching and coaching career. Bill taught science and biology, and was the head football coach for Starbuck High School. Karen passed away August 7, 1992. Bill retired from teaching shortly after. On February 13, 1994, he was united in marriage to Shirley Tvrdik. The couple made their home on Lake Minnewaska, and later moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Shirley passed away in October of 2008. Bill returned to Burlington, Iowa and in 2020, moved back to Starbuck. Bill spent the last few months of his life under the wonderful care of staff at Holly Ridge Manor in Starbuck.
Bill loved hunting and boating. He will be remembered as a man who spent his life dedicated to coaching football and teaching.
Bill passed away Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Holly Ridge Manor in Starbuck, Minnesota. He was 83 years old.
He is survived by two daughters: Mindy Kent of Burnsville and Sheila (Brian) Lanners of Kensington; five grandchildren: Darren Kent, Stephanie (Derek) Stepan, Emily (Brock) Melander, Karen (Carlos) Ribeiro and Sophi Lanners; six great-grandchildren: Maxwell Stepan, Weslie Stepan, Beckett Stepan, Kail Melander, Leo Ribeiro and Noah Ribeiro; three step-sons: Tim (Sandy) Jenum, Greg (Melanie) Jenum and Jeremy Jenum; eight step-grandchildren: Rolf, Karl, Ben, Matthew, Riley, Charlie, David and Erin Jenum; one brother: Tom (Barb) Bailey of Burlington, IA; three nieces: Pam Wright, Cheryl Francis and Amy Klinge and two nephews: Jeff Bailey and Michael Klinge. He was preceded in death by his wife: Karen Bailey; wife: Shirley Bailey; his parents; aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Luther College Football, Minnewaska Athletic Hall of Fame or Holly Ridge Manor.
