Bill Grotts Obituary

Bill Winchester Grotts passed away June 24, 2024, in Sequim, Washington, surrounded by family, where he had resided for four years.

The son of Major (Bill) Grotts and Imogen (Jimmy) Grotts, he was a cool dude with a huge heart, born in the Territory of Alaska in Fairbanks on Aug. 23, 1952, at the old St Joseph's Hospital across the Cushman Street bridge.

He enjoyed camping and fishing near Chena Hot Springs as a boy. He graduated from Lathrop High School in 1970. He and friends started a band, Stairwell Engagement, which became one of the better known of the day. One of their highlights was they were the opening band for Bob Hope when he came to Eileson Air Force Base for a USO show. A self-taught guitar player, he enjoyed playing throughout his lifetime.

Bill's sales career began at Fairbanks Lumber, then Palmer G. Lewis, Greer Tank, Alaska Steel and Bob's Services in Anchorage, Alaska. He enjoyed woodworking and made several unique furniture items. His pride and joy was a 1972 Plymouth Road Runner 440 Six-Pack. After each drive he would go over it cleaning every speck of dirt off.

Upon leaving Alaska he spent many years in Vancouver, Washington, then in St. George, Utah, and finally in Sequim, Washington, with his constant companion, his cat, George. He leaves his daughter, Lindsey Grotts of Portugal; son, Joshuah (Josh) Grotts of Williams, Arizona; brother, Carl Grotts (Karen) of Anchorage Alaska; and sister, Imogen Sue Alden (John) of Sequim, Washington.

Bill moved to a house up the road from us when we were in the third grade. We spent every day together that simmer. We would go out in the woods and pick berries, which his mom, Jimmy, made into pie for us. One of the bedt summers I ever had as a kid.

I worked with Bill at Alaska Steel. He always had a smile, or a joke. He made me laugh a lot and I enjoyed working with him. I had just been thinking about him a few days before I saw he passed. Rest in peace, Bill.

My thoughts are with you. Glad he was with family and his sister, apparently, the last 4 years.
A lifelong classmate from first grade through high school. Can't say how it affects me. Lost the Ginther twins fairly recently also and ... .
Condolences.
p.s. My brother and I own a 69 1/2 six pac Roadrunner. Don't drive it! :)
