Billy Howard (Bill) Sherrill, 91, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away in his home on Sunday, July 16, 2023, surrounded by family.
He was born to Thomas Howard Sherrill and Grace Martelia Aldridge Sherrill, on July 4, 1932, in Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas. Bill attended Harding Academy from first grade through high school in Searcy, Arkansas. He received a degree from Harding College in Physical Education. Bill taught school, coached, ran a sixty-mile mail route through the Ozark mountains of Arkansas, and was a pilot for various doctors in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area. He was also an ordained minister for the Church of Christ and later received a master's degree in counseling from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas and became a licensed professional counselor. He preached full-time first, in Alma, Arkansas, then, Fort Smith, Arkansas and finally, Nacogdoches, Texas where he was the pulpit minister for North Street Church of Christ from 1965 to 1998. He served as North Street's Family Minister from 1998 until the time of his death.
He married Mary Helen (Scotty) Clayton, the love of his life, on May 31, 1953. They recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary with their extended family. Bill is survived by his wife Scotty and their four children, Terri (Jim) Hale, Mark (Alicia) Sherrill, Kathy (Terry) Strong, and Hattie (David) Waserman, as well as thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by parents Thomas and Grace Sherrill and sister Margaret Jane Lynn.
Bill was known for his love for his family, his LORD, and his church family. He was a father figure, as well as a friend to many people over the years. He had a passion for adventure, nature, flying, motorcycling, sailing, water sports, racket ball and go-cart racing to name but a few. Bill was also a storyteller extraordinaire, whether through spoken words, song, or writing. He walked in the footsteps of Jesus, both showing with his life and teaching with his words the power of love and grace to all who would hear, hoping to create an atmosphere of unity and compassion in a broken world. His absence will be forever felt by each and every member of his family.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 21, 2023, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at North Street Church of Christ in Nacogdoches, Texas. His memorial service will also be held at North Street Church of Christ on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with an interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of sending flowers the family requests that people make donations to the Nacogdoches Treatment Center at 119 Hughes, Nacogdoches, TX. www.nactreatmentcenter.org or Neema Village in Tanzania at P.O. Box 21553, Waco, TX 76702. www.neemavillage.org.
