MARQUETTE, MI - Billie Schoonover, age 86, of Marquette, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. A proud veteran, devoted husband, and beloved father and grandfather, Billie lived a full and meaningful life defined by an unwavering love for his family.
After graduating from high school, Billie enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor until his discharge. Shortly after, he married the love of his life, Alice Sundberg. Together, they raised a family and lived in various places before making their home in Marquette.
Billie began his career with the National Weather Service as a computer technician straight out of the Air Force. He remained dedicated to his work for 40 years, retiring in 1992. His commitment and diligence were hallmarks of a life well-lived.
Outside of work, Billie enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting, going to auctions to hunt for treasures, and spending time in the kitchen trying out new recipes. He especially took pride in his new riding lawn mower, so much so that no one else was allowed to drive it. A longtime member of the Elks Lodge, Billie valued community and camaraderie. Known for his stubborn streak, he had a "my way or the highway" attitude, but his deep devotion to his family always shone through.
Billie is survived by his children, Keith Schoonover and Lori Schoonover, both of Marquette, and his beloved grandson, Hugh Schoonover. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, with whom he shared many happy years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marquette Elks Lodge, 127 North Front Street, Marquette, MI 49855. The Canale Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services is serving the family where condolences may be expressed online at canalefuneral.com
