Billie Statom Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Laughlin Service Funeral Home & Crematory - Huntsville on Feb. 18, 2026.
Mr. Billie Randolph Statom, 91, of Huntsville, passed peacefully Sunday night at The Health Center at Research Park with family by his side. He was a retired civilian employee for the US Federal Government at Redstone Arsenal, where he worked as a building inspector. He attended Westlawn Baptist Church for many years.

Billie was a humble and quiet man whose greatest joy in life was his family. A man of deep and abiding faith, he loved his Lord and Savior, and that faith was evident in the way he lived each day. He carried a gentle strength, a steady presence, and a dry sense of humor that kept his family smiling through the years.

After the sudden passing of his father, Billie stepped into the role of caretaker with quiet strength and unwavering devotion. He lovingly helped care for his mother and looked after his sisters, taking seriously the responsibility of being the steady presence his family needed. That sense of duty and love never faded. For years, he faithfully called his sisters every single day, staying connected and making sure they were doing well, until he was no longer physically able to do so.

Billie and Jeanette were married on January 12, 1956, and shared a remarkable 70 years of marriage, building a life together that was a blessing not only to each other, but to everyone who knew them. In his younger years, Billie enjoyed fishing and hunting. Later, he spent many happy seasons bowling in various leagues and tournaments.

He loved sports-especially Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves-and he and Jeanette were devoted season ticket holders for the Huntsville Stars. Though he never played golf himself, he enjoyed watching it. His greatest pride, however, was cheering on his children and grandchildren. Whether it was soccer, baseball, basketball, band performances, or awards programs, even their adult softball games-he was there-faithfully sitting in the stands, offering quiet support. He was their biggest fan. When his old truck was cleaned out, it revealed years of memories: baseball caps, seat cushions, umbrellas, and jackets collected from countless games and events.

Billie was a hardworking man who could fix just about anything, he treasured his workshop, filled with every part and tool a man could need. He loved his Westlawn church family and he was deeply loved by them, and attended faithfully for many years, until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

Billie was kind, generous, and selfless. He was always looking after others. Even as his memory began to fade, his heart for providing never did. He was still trying to make sure his family had what they needed, gas for the car, food to eat, he was always taking care of his family.

Above all, Billie loved his family deeply. He said if often, but more importantly, he showed it every single day of his life.

'The greatest legacy one can pass on to one's children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one's life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.' (Billy Graham)

He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Fannie Statom, and great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Alys Statom.

Mr. Statom is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Jeanette Statom; children, Deborah Lusk and husband, Ronald, Janet Hiser and husband, Robert, and Billie Statom Jr and wife, Tonya; grandchildren, Sarah Schmiedl and husband, Alan, William Lusk and wife, Leslie, Caleb Hiser, Zachary Statom, Victoria Statom, Gabrielle Statom and fiancé, Jackson Rabon, Heavyn Broughton and husband, Kyle, and Christian Brill; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Shirley Windsor and Barbara Statom.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Laughlin Service Funeral Home of Huntsville, where family will receive friends Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Raine Wohlwend officiating. Internment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone at The Health Center at Research Park for their love and care of Billie and our family these past few months, and to Hospice Family Care for their care and support during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alabama Children's Homes, 2681 Rocky Ridge Lane, Birmingham, AL 35216 or Westlawn Baptist Church, 2515 17th Street, SW, Huntsville, AL 38505.
