Billy Eugene Gateley

Billy Eugene Gateley, age 78, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2025 in Memphis. He attended elementary school at Mt. Gilead and Bargerton, high school at LHS, and college at Union University and Memphis State. Mr. Gateley taught math at LHS from 1969-1979 and at Caywood from 1979-2004. He was a TSSAA official for football for 25 years and baseball for 15 years. He was an avid sports fan and loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He loved to go squirrel hunting with his brother in law, David and his dog, Doc. Mr. Gateley always enjoyed Scotts BBQ and german chocolate cake baptized in boiled custard. He will be remembered as a faithful son, brother, husband, father, and poppa. He is survived by his wife, Joan Gateley of nearly 53 years; 1 son, Ryan Wade Gateley (Michelle); 1 daughter, Melanie Gateley Bush (Joey); 1 brother, Gary Lynn Gateley (Wanda); 5 grandchildren, Chazney Roberts, Lauren Bush, Lily Bush, Thomas Lofton Gateley, and Guy William Gateley; and 2 special nephews, David Lane Evans (Christy) and Kyle Thomas Evans (Cara). He was preceded in death by his parents, Lofton and Arthurleen Gateley; 1 grandchild, Ethan Paul Bush; and in laws, Wylie and Nedra Evans. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 26 at 1PM at Broad Street Church of Christ in Lexington with burial to follow in Independence Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday at Reed's Chapel from 2PM-9PM and Wednesday at Broad Street Church of Christ from 9AM until service.
