Billy Joe Glover was born to Faye Estell Holmes Glover and Joe Franklin Glover on October 1, 1938. His father died when he was 9 years old, and the family moved from Fayette County to McNairy County where his maternal grandparents lived. Mr. Glover was preceded in death by his father, Franklin, his step-father Monroe Glover, his mother, and a step-brother Charles.
On Thanksgiving Day in 1962, Mr. Glover married Martha Ann McCullar, and they celebrated over 60 years together. He is survived by his wife, Martha, three children, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. James Adam "Jim" Glover and his wife Stacey Fisher Glover live in Nashville, TN. Molly Ann Glover lives in Memphis, TN, and John Michael "Jack" Glover and his wife Suzie Hively Glover live in Selmer. The grandchildren Sarah Grace and husband Christian Gallichio live in Athens, GA; Katherine Anne Glover lives in Biloxi, MS; John Patrick "JP" and Easton Knight Glover, William and Emily Harris Glover, Matthew and Karissa Heathcock Glover, and Luke Daniel Glover all live in Selmer; and John "Carter" Wyatt lives with his mother in Memphis. All the grandchildren along with three great granddaughters, Iyla Lindiwe Glover, Loraine Pearl Glover, and Margot Dale Gallichio always brought great big smiles to their Papa's face. He is also survived by a beloved sister, Glenda Wolfe Dowty, and nephews Jamie, Scottie, Micky, and Timmy Wolfe along with their spouses and children.
Mr. Glover was both an educator and a civic leader in McNairy County. He first taught math at Fayette County High School and then at Selmer High School, he taught English/American Literature. He became involved in teaching adults to read and became the West Tennessee Consultant for Adult Education with the State Department of Education. He ended his career in education as Superintendent of McNairy County Schools from 1987 to 1996. While serving as the consultant for adult education, he also served as city alderman for Selmer from 1967 to 1969. From 1969 to 1985, he served as mayor for the City of Selmer. As mayor, he was especially interested in providing safe spaces for recreation for the citizens and protecting the city from flooding by building watershed lakes.
Mr. Glover retired in 1996 and turned his attention to renovating houses to provide affordable and safe living spaces in the community. He also enjoyed watching pine trees grow on the tree farm that he co-owned with his business partner and best friend Billy Frank Harris. Golf was one of his greatest passions, loving to play with his friends at Selmer Golf & Country Club.
He was a life long Methodist becoming a Christian as a young boy at Union Grove Methodist Church. After marriage, the family moved their membership to Selmer First United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher for youth and adults. He practiced the teachings of Jesus by loving everyone and expressing kindness and generosity to all, especially those in need. He was a devoted father and loving husband. His love extended to all of God's creatures, especially a Maine Coon cat named Whiskers.
The family asks that memorials be made to Selmer First United Methodist Church, to Zimbabwe Missions, to the McNairy County Imagination Library, or to a charity of your choice.
