Billy "Bill" Cleveland Mathes

Billy “Bill” Cleveland Mathes went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 24, 2025, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, Johnson City, TN. He was born and raised in Washington County and had owned and operated Superior Metal Finishing and had also worked for Eastman Kodak. Bill was a faithful and dedicated member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gray, TN. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army Reserves and was an avid antique car lover. Bill’s pride and joy was his 1963 Chevrolet Impala.

Mr. Mathes was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert and Bessie Mathes; sister, Jewell Gulley; brother, Henry Mathes and grandson, Hunter Markland. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Velma Mathes; daughter, Heather Markland and husband, David; son, Travis Mathes and grandson, Austin Markland.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 396 Oak Grove Road, Gray, TN 37615. The service will be officiated by Pastor Sherrel Nave.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 396 Oak Grove Road, Gray, TN 37615.
