Billy McKinnon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Osborn Funeral Home - Shreveport on May 1, 2025.
In Loving Memory of Billy Wayne McKinnon "Deputy Dog," whose kindness and love will live on in our hearts forever.
With deep sorrow and lasting pride, we honor the life of Billy Wayne McKinnon-beloved husband, father, Pawpaw, Veteran, and friend. A true servant at heart and pillar of his community, Billy Wayne was the one you could always count on. The kind of friend who showed up, no questions asked.
Billy Wayne was called home to be with his Lord and Savior at the age of 82, just two days shy of his 83rd birthday, while surrounded by his loving family and many friends, at Willis Knighton North Hospital, near his current home in Greenwood, LA, on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
From an early age, after graduating from Byrd High School in 1960, he lived a life of service. As a Navy diver, he proudly served his country with courage and discipline.
He went on to serve his community as a Caddo Parish Sheriff's Deputy and was a member of the Caddo Sheriff's Water Rescue Squad, while also serving as a dive instructor for YMCA.
Fueled by a passion for speed, he dove into the world of asphalt and dirt track racing, where the legend of "Deputy Dog" was born.
Billy Wayne was more than a racer-he was a pioneer. As the original developer of Motorsports in Greenwood, he transformed his 97 acres into what became Boothill Speedway. His tireless work continued in leadership roles, from managing the Ark-La-Tex Auto Auction Recon Center to owning and operating River City Pawn Shop, where he served his community with integrity and heart.
While a successful entrepreneur, and between businesses owned, Billy Wayne found freedom on the open road as a long-haul Owner/Operator. Known by his CB handle "Deputy Dog," he logged over 2 million miles crisscrossing the country without being involved in an accident. However, one remarkable day, he prevented one–and for that, he received a formal letter of thanks from the U.S. Department of Energy for his quick action, making it possible for the unharmed Federal Agents to continue the mission they were on. The agents described his actions to prevent a serious vehicle accident with the words, "bravery, exemplary driving skills, and genuine concern for public safety."
Over the years and countless miles, he proudly passed on the ropes of trucking to many drivers, always generous with his time, wisdom, and a helping hand. He held a deep respect for the companies he trucked for, especially the PMI Preferred Materials family of Minden, owned by Kary Bryce, and the Gentry Trucking family of Greenwood, owned by Brad Gentry. They shared the following, "He was greatly respected and will be greatly missed! Legendary!"
Billy Wayne loved with strength, loyalty, and a deep faith that guided every step. Above all, he loved his family–especially his loving wife, Jan, the absolute love of his life. His devotion to them was unshakable. He was a provider, protector, and comfort to all who knew him. Though his absence leaves a tremendous void, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
He adored calling his wife "my bride," a heartfelt testament to the profound love he held for her. Their bond wasn't just strong–it was unbreakable. As they approached 46 years of marriage in July, it was clear they weren't simply good together; they were extraordinary.
He is reunited in Heaven with his mother, Beulah Mericle McKinnon; father, Ancel A. "Mack" McKinnon; brother, Harry Paul McKinnon; mother-in-law, Glenwell Prince King; father-in-law, Bobby Joe King; and brother-in-law, John Belton King.
Those left to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Mary Jan King McKinnon; daughter, Brandi McKinnon Davis and husband, Justin; daughter, Jenny Leeper; son, Chad Leeper and wife, Eva; and son, Michael Brian McKinnon. A proud and cherished "Pawpaw" to Hunter and Brilee Davis, and Nate, Duncan, and Zurie Leeper.
He is also survived by his sister, Sandra McKinnon Loridans and husband, Henri; brother-in-law, Bobby Joe King, Jr. (Donna) and their children Lisa, Adam, and Sara; sister-in-law, Susan King and daughter, Kristi; sister-in-law, Calene Owen McKinnon and nieces, Shannon McKinnon Hooker (Kevin), Kristen McKinnon Chona (Julio), and Valerie McKinnon-Johnson.
Billy Wayne was deeply loved by his extended family and lifelong friends, including those from the Davis, Kovac, and Felan families.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Caddo Parish Fire District 3 and the Greenwood Police Department for their care and support. They arrived swiftly with extreme knowledge and expert training. They were so compassionate and respectful. They will not be forgotten.
A special thank you also to the compassionate staff at Willis-Knighton North Emergency Room and the ICU, especially the dedicated nurses and doctors, each one talked with us in detail and provided over-the-top care to our beloved Billy Wayne.
A memorial service honoring Bill Wayne's life will be held at Osborn Funeral Home on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Brother Jerry Steele to officiate. Inurnment will take place following the service at Forest Park Cemetery, 4000 Meriwether Rd., Shreveport, Louisiana, 71109.
Rest easy, "Deputy Dog."
Your race is run. Your road is complete.
You will be enormously missed, but your legacy rolls on-in every mile, every memory, and every heart you've touched. You are loved RIP our sweet 'DD.'
