Billy Joel Nelson, 45, of Aurora (formerly of Flandreau) passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM, Friday, December 6, 2024 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD. The family will be present for visitation from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau, SD.
Billy was born on May 25, 1979 in Grand Marais, MN to Kevin and Teresa (Rice) Nelson. The family later moved to Flandreau, SD where Billy went on to receive his education, graduating from Flandreau High School. While living in Flandreau, Billy welcomed his daughter, Mazzy, into the world. Billy then met the love of his life, Amber Latham, and they moved to Brookings and eventually Aurora. They expanded their family welcoming their three sons: Payden, Mason, and Liam.
He worked several jobs including Rainbow Play Systems and Twin City Fan until he went into business for himself as a property owner and manager, creating Nelson Property Management. Billy loved his business and enjoyed the time it allowed for him to be with his children and teach them everything he was doing within his business. He was so proud of what he had built.
Billy was a loving father and spouse. He cherished family time. Sundays were a favorite day spent together, "Sunday Funday" he liked to call it. No matter what was going on, the family made time to be together on Sundays; whether it was watching football, bike riding, tanning in the pool, grilling or just hanging out together. Billy also loved to take his kids fishing and having a campfire. When not busy with the family, you could find him meticulously caring for his house and yard. He was very proud of keeping everything looking its best (it might be rumored to be the best yard in Aurora).
This loss, for family and friends, will be felt for a lifetime. Billy was truly one of the great ones. He had a way with people, always friendly, always a smile on his face, and always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Billy will be deeply missed by his wife, Amber, and his four children, Mazzy Johanson, Payden, Mason, and Liam Nelson; mother, Teresa (Stephen) Nelson, Flandreau; siblings, Jamie (Chrysanthemum) Nelson, Henderson, NV, Jennifer (Shelby) Nelson, Flandreau, Tracy (Dustin) Johnson, Orfordville, WI, Darci (Nathan) Gundvaldson, Brookings, Mark Nelson, Brookings; sister in Law, Daniela Haas, Sioux City, IA; and brother-in-law, Joseph Haas, Brookings; grandparents, Leo and Cecilia Rice, Flandreau, SD.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kevin Nelson; grandparents, Bette and Walter Bach, and Mickey Nelson.
You are invited to a time of fellowship and lunch following the burial (Union Cemetery) at the Second Presbyterian Church hall, Flandreau, SD.
