Billy Gene Shanks ,98, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, at Cedar Creek in Logansport, IN.
Billy was born on May 24, 1926, to Arthur Leon Shanks and Clara Avanelle (Slagal) Shanks. On July 31, 1949, he married the love of his life, Virginia Meyer. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and companionship until Virginia's passing on July 26, 2020.
A proud World War II Navy veteran and member of American Legion Post #60, Billy served his country with honor and pride. After the war, he embarked on a career with the Pennsylvania Railroad, dedicating 27 years of his life to the company. Following his retirement from the railroad, Billy continued his service to the community by working at the utilities department for the City of Logansport. His strong work ethic and commitment to his duties were admired by all who knew him.
Billy is survived by his two daughters, Peggy (Gary) Johnson of Logansport, IN, and Judy (Jim) Micklos of Chicago, IL. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Beeler of Logansport, IN, and his seven grandchildren: Elisha Reinhart of New Bern, NC; Kahla Shanks of Logansport, IN; Cara (Jake Faulkner) Johnson of Ingalls, IN; Matthew (Crystal) Johnson of Oak Grove, MO, Brian (Christie) Johnson of Rochester, WA, Jared (Amanda Hicks) Micklos of New York, NY, and Nathan (Jill) Micklos of Port Orchard, WA. Billy was blessed with nine great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, who brought joy to his later years, as well as two nephews, one niece, and many great-nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death his son, Bruce A. Shanks.
A combined celebration of Billy's and Virginia’s lives will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday July 16, 2024, in the Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Candice Hinkle officiating. Full military rites will be provided by the Cass County Honor Guard.. A private burial for Billy will take place at Spring Creek Cemetery, Logansport, IN.
A visitation time for Billy and Virginia will also be held on Tuesday from 11:00 am until time of services at the funeral home
