Billyjack Gary Curtis, 51, of
Augusta, Maine, passed away on February 2, 2026. Billyjack died doing what he had always done throughout his life, protecting others.
Born with a fierce heart and an instinct to shield those he loved, Billyjack was known from childhood on as a protector. Family wasn't just important to him, it was everything. That devotion shaped the way he lived and ultimately the way he died.
Billyjack had a sense of humor that was truly off the charts. He delighted in laughter and was infamous for sending completely inappropriate memes and jokes, always with the goal of making someone smile. He cried openly at weddings, loved birthday cake, and was always up
for an adventure, big or small, especially if it meant time with the people he loved. He was a terrible singer, but that never stopped him from singing at the top of his lungs just to make his wife laugh. He even protected his portion of the date squares and Spanish rice made for him and his sister by their mother, often threatening her to steal hers.
He took great joy in watching others experience joy and had a deep compassion for animals, often taking in strays or animals with disabilities because he couldn't stand to see anything or anyone hurting. Though Billyjack faced his own struggles throughout life, he never turned away
from someone in need. Helping others came naturally to him, even when it cost him something personally.
He found peace outdoors, especially while fishing, and could most often be found on the banks of the Kennebec River with his wife and fishing partner, where quiet moments and shared laughter mattered more than the catch itself. Billyjack proudly served in the United States Army
for a little over a year before being medically discharged due to injury.
Billyjack had a way of making those closest to him feel safe simply by being near. No one could make his family smile or laugh the way he did. He was a devoted husband, a fiercely loving father, and a man whose presence brought comfort and security. He was the best dad, and he
deserved so much more than he ever received.
He is survived by his mother, Gloria Curtis; his sister, Niki Merrill, and her husband, Casey; his wife, Jessica Curtis; his mother-in-law, Cathy Racine-King; his children, Jase Pelkey, Vox Stratos, Shamus and Shilee Thompson, Lillian and Delilah Curtis. He was preceded in
death by his father, Nicholas Curtis.
A service will be announced later in the spring. We appreciate your understanding and respect for the family's need to wait during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Billyjack's memory to the Houlton Humane Society or to the LINC Wellness Center in Augusta, organizations that reflect his compassion for animals and his desire to see others supported and cared for.
