Bishop James Buford Lanter, 87 of Rockingham, a devoted minister and educator, completed his earthly journey and joined the church triumphant on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. He was born on June 24, 1937, in Grayson County, Virginia, and dedicated his life to serving his faith and community.
A pillar within the Church of God of Prophecy, Bishop Lanter held leadership roles in various congregations, notably in the churches of Rockingham, Ghio, and Wadesboro. His commitment to his ministry left a lasting impact on the lives of those he served. In addition to his ministry, he contributed to the education of young minds as a textiles teacher at Richmond Senior High School, where he shared his knowledge and passion for the field with his students.
Bishop Lanter's professional journey also included significant roles in the business sector, where he served as a Personnel Manager with Burlington Industries, Tartan Boat Company, and Doran Textiles. His varied experiences demonstrated a commitment to fostering both personal and professional development in those around him.
Beyond his career, Bishop Lanter enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He had a deep love for the outdoors and cherished the time spent fishing. However, it was his family who brought him the greatest joy. He treasured moments with his wife of 70 years, Doris Mitchell Lanter; his daughter, Amy Stricklin (Jamie); his grandson, Dakota Stricklin (Kristin); and his great grandson, Easton James Stricklin. He is also survived by his brother, Clifton Lanter, and his sister, Teresa Sharp.
Bishop Lanter joins his beloved family members in eternal rest, including his father Robert Lanter; his mother Nellie Rose Boyles Lanter; and his siblings Harold Dean, Robert, Jr., Donald, and Alma.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at The ROC Church of God of Prophecy in Rockingham, North Carolina, beginning at 10:45 AM and concluding at 11:45 AM. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM . Entombment will follow in the Richmond County Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pastor Steve Gilmer will officiate the services.
Bishop James Buford Lanter leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and love that will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. His spirit will continue to inspire those who strive to live with kindness and purpose in his memory.
