Robert Charles Carter, II, age 72, of Onaway, died at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital on Saturday, September 13, 2025. The son of Robert Sr. and Louisa "Joan" (Dunn) Carter, Bob was born in Rogers City on September 5, 1953. A lifelong resident of Northern Michigan, he was raised in Tower and graduated from Onaway High School in the class of 1971.
After graduating from high School, Bob chose to follow in his father's footsteps and pursued a career as a lineman. Working throughout the State of Michigan, he built transmission lines until his health forced him into early retirement.
Having grown up in Northern Michigan, Bob developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He was passionate about deer and small game hunting, spending countless hours in the woods pursuing his favorite pastime. Bob also enjoyed fishing the local lakes and streams, always searching for the perfect spot to cast his line. In addition to hunting and fishing, he found great joy in exploring two-track roads throughout the North, whether in his jeep or riding quads alongside his son. When he wasn't in the woods, Bob could often be found tending to his vegetable garden.
Bob possessed a competitive nature that was evident in his lifelong participation in local sports and games. He dedicated many years to playing men's slow pitch softball, becoming a familiar face on the field and making lasting memories with his teammates. In addition to softball, Bob was a skilled pool player, competing regularly on the Northland Bar Men's Pool League. Bowling was another passion of Bob's. He was a member of several bowling leagues at Spare Time Lanes in Cheboygan, and he frequently traveled throughout Northern Michigan to participate in various tournaments.
Well known in the community, Bob will be remembered for his goofy sense of humor and quick wit. His good-natured personality made a lasting impression on those around him. Even during challenging times, Bob maintained a positive outlook. His ability to bring smiles and laughter will be fondly recalled by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bob will be sadly missed by his sons, Robbie Carter III (fiancé – Katie) of Columbus, Ohio and Hunter Carter of Gaylord; grandson, Connor Carter of Gaylord; and sister, Bonita "BJ" Carter of Onaway. He also leaves uncles, Keith Carter of Louisiana and Larry Carter of Atlanta; aunts, Gale Dunn and Jill Dunn Renard both of Onaway; as well as good friends, Maria and Yolanda, many cousins; numerous friends; and his faithful four-legged companion, Scrappy.
Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Danielle Lawrence; infant siblings, Richard Dale and Louisa Marie; uncles, Raymond Carter, Clayton, and Dick Dunn; aunt, Corieda Carter; and his parents.
As were Bob's wishes, there will not be a funeral service, but rather a celebration of life to be held at a later date. For those wishing to express their condolences contributions in memory of Bob may be made to his family to help with final expenses.
