Bobby Smith Obituary

Bobby Edmond Smith, born March 5, 1946, in Butte, Montana, arrived in the world as his family was enroute from Mitchell, South Dakota, to make their new home in Walla Walla. Though his birth took place in Montana, Walla Walla became home in every sense of the word, the place he grew up, built his life, and poured his heart into the community he loved.
Bobby's early years were spent on the family's pony farm, where his lifelong passion for animals began. He attended Adventist academies and graduated from Milo Academy in Days Creek, Oregon. Following in the footsteps of generations before him, Bobby worked for the family business, Smith Nursing Home, proudly representing the third generation of care and service.
The Smith family was also instrumental in introducing Hackney ponies to the Walla Walla area. Known for their renowned six-pony hitch, Bobby and his brother, Dick, were celebrated as the "Roman Riders." Bobby's exceptional talent for training and showing ponies earned him recognition throughout the Northwest and eventually led him to Iowa, where he spent five years working under acclaimed horse trainer Gib Marcucci. Though the experience was invaluable, his heart belonged to home, and he soon returned to Walla Walla.
Bobby's other passion was antiques. Upon his return, he found a new calling in the auctioneering business, where his charisma, quick wit, and warm smile made him a natural. He enjoyed a long and rewarding career before retiring.
He is survived by his wife Sue Smith, daughters Buffy Henson and Sara Mooney, both of whom he was so proud of, brother Richard (Dick) Smith, four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many cherished friends.
Bobby and his wife Sue had a rare and beautiful love that stood the test of time for nearly 44 years. Together, they shared a deep connection built on laughter, trust, and unwavering devotion.
Bobby was known for his kindness, generosity, and deep roots in the Walla Walla community. He never met a stranger, always offered a helping hand, and could be found most mornings sharing stories and laughter with "the boys" over a cup of coffee. A man of faith and integrity, Bobby lived by example, humble, loyal, and always guided by love. His legacy will live on through the warmth he brought to every life he touched and the enduring kindness he left behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 7, 2026, from 12–4 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Walla Walla.
