Bohdan Pokora Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home - Glastonbury on Feb. 2, 2026.
Bohdan M. Pokora, 74, of Glastonbury, died at Hartford Hospital, on January 28, 2026, after a short and aggressive cancer. His wife Anna was with him as he passed. He was born on November 6, 1951, in New York City and raised in Passaic, N.J. He attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also graduated with a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Hartford. He was proud of his work at Combustion Engineering, Millstone Nuclear Power Station at Northeast Utilities and finished his career in energy at Eversource. During his time as an engineer, he was issued a patent for a containment hydrogen removal system for a nuclear power plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents Stefania (Morawsky) and Stefan Pokora, who both immigrated to the United States from Ukraine after WWII.

Bohdan and Anna first met as teenagers in front of the Russian Embassy in New York during a demonstration to free Ukrainian Political Prisoners. Years later they met at a dance in Upstate New York and married in Ellenville, NY in 1976.

Bohdan is survived by his wife, Anna; son Colonel Andrew Pokora and his wife Vera and their children Lucas and Sofie; son Roman; his brother Alexander and his wife Vera and their son Marko with wife Jana and children Leon and Mila. He is also survived by his cousins Sonia (Paul) Haley and their sons, Natalie (Paul) Mudge, and Lesia (Roman) Kruchowy.

He was a member of Plast, a Ukrainian scouting organization growing up, which fueled his sense of adventure. He earned his private pilot license which he used to fly his young family across New England. Later he traded his wings for sails and sailed his family extensively across the Long Island Sound. Bohdan enjoyed hiking, camping with his family, bicycling, keeping saltwater and fresh water fish, and model trains. His passion for flying did not diminish with his retirement - he would make flight plans and fly them in a Flight Simulator often. In retirement he also looked forward to meeting his work friends for pizza and conversation.

He was a member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church and was active in the Ukrainian community. He followed events in Ukraine closely.

The Pokora family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. John Rodgers, his Primary Care Physician for decades, Dr Tarantino, and the Hartford Hospital Step-Down Unit staff. Bohdan's Funeral and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Bohdan was a dear friend for many years. We met as families with young children, newcomers to the Hartford area Ukrainian diaspora community. Something clicked, as it does with true friends - common interests, a common sense of goals, a shared sense of humor. Bohdan and my husband, both engineers, even ended up working for the same large firm, although in different divisions.
Once the children grew up and went their separate ways, we began to get together more often - a casual dinner here and there, attending the same events, getting together with a mutual group of friends, even taking the same Danube River cruise. Bohdan and my husband had many interests in common and after retirement scheduled some regular volunteer activities together.
We remember Bohdan with a deep affection that grew and endured over many years. We will miss the fun and great conversations. We will miss that good heart, great smile and quick wit. We will always remember. '!

With deepest sympathy to Anna and the family. Bohdan is remembered for his dry wit and humor, for wonderful past gatherings in our homes and for the lively exchange of ideas and conversations. May Bohdan be embraced in God's loving arms and rest in peace.

...
With deepest sympathy.
Bohdan will be remembered for his keen intellect, joy of flying in blue skies and tailwinds, and friendship.
