Lviv, Ukraine
Formerly of Burt, Michigan
Beloved son, brother, fiancé, and grandson, Bowen Keith Schardt passed away on October 20, 2025, in Lviv, Ukraine.
Born on December 28, 1999, in Saginaw, Michigan, Bowen was the cherished son of Keith and Teresa (Carstensen) Schardt.
He graduated from a Tennessee trade program in 2020, earning his Electrical Lineman Certification. In 2023, Bowen made the courageous decision to move to Ukraine, where he proudly served as a combat medic in the International Legion during the Russian–Ukrainian war. He was respected among his fellow soldiers and known as a “Boss” who consistently put others before himself. Revered as one of the best in every unit he served, Bowen saved countless lives, both physically and emotionally. All that knew him felt privileged to serve alongside him. He received numerous medals and honors for his bravery and service.
Beyond his heroism, Bowen was known for caring deeply for the people around him and found joy in connecting with people from all walks of life. His passion for travel took him across three continents, where he explored the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Sahara Desert, and Carpathian Mountains. He had a special appreciation for film photography as seen in many of his own photographs.
One of Bowen’s favorite memories was spending time cooking, singing, and dancing with his fiancée, Dorina Kinga Szabó, often ending in playful flour fights filled with laughter and love. Their love for each other is like the flower Forget Me Not and is destined to live on.
Bowen is survived by his parents Keith and Teresa Schardt; fiancée Dorina Kinga Szabó; sisters Grace (Aaron Wheeler), Aryn, and Leah Schardt; grandmothers Barbara (Steven Goodnow) Carstensen and Edna Schardt; nephew Raiden Alonso and niece Amira Wheeler; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers John Carstensen, Robert Bright, and Richard Schardt.
Funeral service will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 4480 Mackinaw Rd, Saginaw, MI 48603. Pastor Kaymon Noble will officiate with entombment to follow at Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum. Friends may visit the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bowen’s honor to The Weatherman Foundation, which supports families of foreign soldiers serving in Ukraine.
